The health benefits of... strawberries
It's difficult to resist a perfectly ripe strawberry, but did you know just how good they are for you? Nutritionist Jo Lewin shares the nutrition benefits of the bright red berry.
An introduction to strawberries
Today's Halloween customs are thought to have been influenced by folk customs and beliefs from the Celtic-speaking countries, some of which have pagan roots, and others which may be rooted in Celtic Christianity.[35][36] Indeed, Jack Santino, a folklorist, writes that "the sacred and the religious are a fundamental context for understanding Halloween in Northern Ireland, but there was throughout Ireland an uneasy truce existing between customs and beliefs associated with Christianity and those associated with religions that were Irish before Christianity arrived".[37] Historian Nicholas Rogers, exploring the origins of Halloween, notes that while "some folklorists have detected its origins in the Roman feast of Pomona, the goddess of fruits and seeds, or in the festival of the dead called Parentalia, it is more typically linked to the Celtic festival of Samhain", which comes from the Old Irish for "summer's end".[35] Samhain (pronounced sah-win or sow-in) was the first and most important of the four quarter days in the medieval Gaelic calendar and was celebrated in Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man.[38][39] It was held on or about 31 October – 1 November and kindred festivals were held at the same time of year by the Brittonic Celts; for example Calan Gaeaf (in Wales), Kalan Gwav (in Cornwall) and Kalan GoaƱv (in Brittany). Samhain and Calan Gaeaf are mentioned in some of the earliest Irish and Welsh literature. The names have been used by historians to refer to Celtic Halloween customs up until the 19th century,[40] and are still the Gaelic and Welsh names for Halloween.

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups pumpkin seeds
2 teaspoons melted butter (olive oil or vegetable oil work well) or 2 teaspoons melted oil (olive oil or vegetable oil work well)
salt
garlic powder (optional)
cayenne pepper (optional)
seasoning salt (optional)
cajun seasoning (optional)
Directions:

1
Preheat oven to 300 degrees F.
2
While it's OK to leave some strings and pulp on your seeds (it adds flavor) clean off any major chunks.
3
Toss pumpkin seeds in a bowl with the melted butter or oil and seasonings of your choice.
4
Spread pumpkin seeds in a single layer on baking sheet.
5
Bake for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown.
Bat Bites
These bite-sized bats have an adult-friendly flavor from the goat cheese, cream cheese, and pesto mixture. The kids will love to shape the bats' bodies, decorate their faces, and give them wings.
Preparation
To make the royal icing, place the egg white and lemon juice in a small bowl. Gradually add the icing sugar to form a smooth paste. Divide the icing into 2 even portions. Tint a portion using the orange colouring. Spread the icing evenly over each of the pumpkin shapes. Use a small sharp knife to trim the licorice strap into small triangles to create eyes and mouth. Attach to biscuits. Cut sour strap into 1mm-thick strips, wrap around a skewer to create a vine. Attach to the top of each pumpkin. Set aside to set.
Step 7
Spread the white icing evenly over the ghost cookies. Pipe chocolate gel onto the ghosts to create eyes. Sprinkle evenly with glitter to create a shimmer. Set aside to set completely.
